DuPage County staff report two quarry sinkholes repaired and under monitoring

Public Works staff reported to the DuPage County Public Works Committee on May 20 that crews have repaired two sinkholes at a county quarry and are monitoring the areas before completing final restoration.
Staff said one sinkhole, located in the quarry’s west lobe, resulted from a void in compacted fill. Crews removed the material, re-compacted the area and replaced the removed fill; the area is being monitored before equipment is removed and the location is closed out. A second sinkhole at the West Lobe Pump Station was evaluated by a geotechnical expert; staff said crews found missing fill and installed low-strength concrete where construction in the early 1990s had left a gap, preventing erosion under the structure. Staff reported both areas have been repaired and will be monitored.
The update was informational; the committee did not take formal action. Staff did not report a need for emergency funding or outside permitting related to the repairs during the meeting.
