The update, delivered during the board’s administrative report, said shelter population typically rises entering kitten season and has been “hovering in that 150 to 200 animal range.” Staff described rehoming work that included transfers to rescue partners and direct adoptions.
The shelter’s veterinary clinic has moved into renovated space and the organization’s veterinarian, identified in the meeting as Dr. K, has begun performing surgeries there, staff said. Officials also said numerous punch-list items remain and that some systems are not yet fully functional.
Staff reported the rooftop HVAC unit (RTU) installed during the renovation is undersized. A staff member said a third party has recommended replacing at least one unit and that the contractor covers the work; staff estimated they would have a clearer replacement timeline within about a week and a half to two weeks. The board noted the possibility the RTU issue may not be fully resolved by the grand reopening.
DuPage Animal Friends plans a public grand reopening on June 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a donor VIP event on June 11 for major contributors. Staff said they intend to complete the majority of punch-list items before the public event, but acknowledged some items may remain.
The board discussion included volunteers’ roles in recent events and shelter operations; staff said they will continue coordinating with contractors and partner organizations to complete the clinic punch list and to manage animal intake and placement.
Meeting participants did not vote on construction or HVAC work during the session; staff described next steps and implementation timelines.
