Council accepts $3,000 Walmart Spark Good grant; funds split for smoke/CO alarms, crime prevention and Shop with a Cop

The West Bend Common Council on May 19 accepted a $3,000 Walmart Spark Good grant and placed the funds in the accounts specified by city staff.
Chief (unnamed) spoke on behalf of the fire and police departments and the local Fraternal Order of Police, and recognized John Fitzgerald, identified in the meeting as a Walmart manager and community partner. Staff said the grant has been received several years running and proposed splitting the $3,000 three ways: $1,000 for the fire department’s smoke and carbon monoxide alarm program, $1,000 for the police department’s crime prevention fund, and $1,000 routed through finance to the Fraternal Order of Police’s Shop with a Cop program.
Alderman Bergquist and Alderman Schmidt seconded and supported the request; the council approved the resolution on a voice vote with no recorded opposition.
Next steps: finance staff will place the funds into the accounts identified by the departments and disburse the $1,000 earmarked for Shop with a Cop through the Fraternal Order of Police as described in the motion.
