Council amends traffic manual: River Road speed limit lowered, new four-way stop, mid-block crossing added

The City of West Bend Common Council on May 19 adopted four changes to the city traffic manual recommended by the Traffic Safety Commission.
City staff and the traffic safety commission asked the council to: lower the speed limit on River Road from 55 mph to 45 mph out to Rusco Road; add parking restrictions in a neighborhood district where sight lines from driveways were impaired; install a four-way stop at Water and Forest due to nearby development and reduced sight lines; and add a mid-block pedestrian crossing for the county buildings on East Washington Street. Director Newman reported the city had installed “yield to pedestrian” signs at River and Decorah earlier the same day.
Chief (unnamed) and Alderman Schmidt briefed the council on the measures and said they were intended to improve visibility and pedestrian safety in developing areas. Council members voted to approve the manual changes on voice votes; no recorded opposition was announced.
Next steps: staff will update the traffic manual, arrange for signage and striping as required, and schedule any physical traffic-calming work with public works. The Traffic Safety Commission will continue to monitor intersections and return to council with additional recommendations as needed.
