McLennan County commissioners approved a $5,000 funding allocation to support training at the Waco Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association's upcoming statewide convention, after staff explained the county may only fund activities that serve a county purpose and must do so under a formal agreement.
Terry, president of the Waco Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, told the court the convention will bring "about 300 to 350 people to Waco" and will include three days of classes at the convention center for law enforcement and citizens. County staff reminded commissioners that "county cannot donate or have a ... provide a sponsorship to an event," but that the court can enter an agreement to pay for specific, documented expenses that serve a county purpose and include reporting requirements.
Commissioners discussed matching any city contribution and noted the training component (TCO credit) made the request appropriate for county support. One commissioner moved to "suggest that we have $5,000 for training purposes," the court seconded the motion and the court approved the allocation. Staff said they would coordinate with the City of Waco and draft an agreement describing the scope, amount and required reporting.
