Commission approves Robert Weiler illuminated wall sign with color limit on smaller sign

The downtown design panel on June 24 approved a new illuminated wall sign for the Robert Weiler Company at 4 East Broad Street but attached a condition limiting the color palette of an adjacent smaller sign.
City staff described the proposed 40-inch-by-66-inch LED-illuminated wall sign mounted to the building’s south façade and noted the downtown guidelines discourage visual clutter and recommend a cohesive rhythm for multiple tenant signs on one façade. Paul Bridal of SignFX appeared for the applicant, explained mounting and a plan to cover existing holes in the façade with a reverse pan, and said the installation would consolidate and clean up existing signage.
Commissioners and staff expressed concern about the number of tenant elements on the single façade and asked the applicant to simplify the smaller sign to reduce competing shapes and colors. The commission voted to approve the main illuminated sign while conditioning that the smaller sign be refaced with a gray or silver background and purple lettering (or similar muted palette) to visually harmonize with the larger RW element. One commissioner recorded an opposition on the vote; the motion otherwise carried.
The approval includes the submitted mounting details and the requirement that the smaller left-hand sign be refaced per the commission’s direction; the applicant said they would confer with the client and return if the client declined the color change.
