Resident urges Dalton to stop issuing more downtown liquor licenses

A Dalton resident told the mayor and council on May 19 that the city should stop approving additional liquor licenses for downtown businesses.
Harry Patel, identified in the meeting as a liquor store owner, told the council Dalton currently has 16 liquor licenses and had nine in February 2015; he said nearby counties have obtained many new licenses and that Dalton had received four new licenses in the last four years. “So I'm here to request city administration to stop putting more liquor license to the downtown cities,” Patel said.
Mayor and council members directed city administration to follow up. The mayor said city administrator Andrew Parker would follow up with Patel and noted that the Public Safety Commission would hear liquor-license applications at its meeting the next morning at 8:30 a.m.; the mayor invited Patel to appear before that body.
Council did not take action on the request during the May 19 meeting; staff follow-up and any formal application reviews would occur through the city’s licensing process and the Public Safety Commission.
