A county commissioner said Dale Moore, president of the Southern Maryland Navy Alliance, gave an overview at a recent luncheon and will chair a new state commission that addresses aviation issues including space and autonomous aviation.
The commissioner said the commission had originally been intended to exclude St. Mary's County, but that county lobbyists worked to secure a seat to represent the county and its work. “Our lobbyists worked and got us a seat on that to represent St. Mary's County and the work being done here,” the commissioner said.
The speaker noted attendees at the luncheon included U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (noted in transcript as "Senators Van Hollen"), members of Congress present, and county presenters: Kelly Hinkle from the county's economic development office and Dr. Wilson from the College of Southern Maryland, who the speaker said also presented. The transcript lists “Congressman Hoyer” and “Congresswoman Elfreth” as present.
The commissioner called the county's seat on the commission “a huge win” because it gives the county recognition across the state and could position it for state resources as the commission proceeds. The transcript does not include formal commitments of state funding or specific next steps from the commission.
