Council members used the announcements period to flag upcoming neighborhood meetings, the schedule for budget hearings and several community events across the city.
Council member Porterfield told colleagues that budget hearings resume the following day and will run Monday through Thursday each week starting at 4 p.m.; the first two work sessions will begin with presentations and later sessions will address the council’s wish list. Porterfield said yesterday’s committee meetings and the council meeting that day meant hearings did not meet as scheduled.
Council member Joyce Styles announced that District 32 will hold its monthly community meeting Thursday, May 29, at 6 p.m. at the Southeast Community Center to discuss a new project on Hamilton Church Road and to reveal a proposed plan for the Starwood site. Council member Kimbrough said District 1 will hold a community meeting Thursday at 4121 Clarksville Pike at Word of Life Church to discuss rezonings. Council member Evans said District 12 is holding a last-Saturday-of-the-month community meeting at the Hermitage Library from 10:30 a.m. to noon to discuss reappraisal, the budget process and a potential rezoning on Central Pike.
Several members announced public events: Council member Voh highlighted the Asian Pacific Islander Arts Fest at the Frist on Saturday, May 24, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the 25th annual Memorial Day Dash on Monday, May 26; and a Chestnut Hill neighborhood barbecue at Dudley Park on May 31. Council member Benedict invited colleagues to a May 26 Memorial Day event at the Litton Alumni Center on Gallatin Pike at 10 a.m. Council member Suara noted ongoing budget conversations and that the next session will be streamed on Facebook Live Saturday from 3 to 4 p.m.
During a personal-privilege remark, Council member Ewing called attention to May as Tuberous Sclerosis Awareness Month, described the disorder as a rare genetic disease and urged constituents to oppose proposed cuts to scientific research funding that he said could affect rare-disease research; that comment was made as a personal appeal and did not result in council direction or action in the transcript.
The council also welcomed a class from the MC3 program and thanked partners who support summer swimming lessons and other community programs. The announcements period closed after about 20 minutes of remarks and scheduling updates.
