Historic Commission allows demolition of 1990s garage at 37 Cliff Road; asks applicant to revise pergola design
Summary
The commission cleared removal of a 1990s garage attached by a connector to a 1911 main house at 37 Cliff Road, but asked the applicant to revise the proposed pergola so it uses more typical, natural‑to‑weather detailing and kick panels on doors.

The commission voted to permit the demolition of a 1990s garage addition at 37 Cliff Road but asked the applicant to return with revised pergola details.
HDC staff noted the main dwelling dates to 1911 and that the garage addition is a later feature (circa 1990). The applicant said removing the garage would improve the house’s condition and add a smaller pant‑roof and pergola at the east elevation to maintain function at a kitchen door.
The Historic Structures Advisory Group reviewed the filing and said the demolition is acceptable but recommended kick panels on French doors and that the pergola be natural to weather. Commissioners said the pergola’s posts and rafters appeared overly stout and “whimsical,” and directed the applicant to prepare a more typical, less visually prominent pergola profile and to make materials finish natural to weather. The applicant agreed to submit revised pergola drawings for the next meeting; the demolition itself was accepted subject to those design revisions.
