Commission approves roof‑access stair repairs at 121 Wauwinet Road with railing condition
Summary
The Historic Commission approved work to repair an existing roof‑access stair and railings at 121 Wauwinet Road, but asked the applicant to keep a mid rail and to in‑fill with wire rather than stainless‑finished cable so the installation appears less visually prominent.

The Nantucket Historic Commission approved as‑built repairs to a roof‑access stair and deck at 121 Wauwinet Road but attached design conditions for the railing and finish.
The applicant said the roof walk and stairs date back decades and have been rebuilt at least once; the proposed work would replace deteriorated steps and railings and make the stair safer for users. Commissioners noted the structure is not visible from the road or from the nearby beach because of dune screening, but discussed railing material and finish at length. Several commissioners said they preferred natural‑to‑weather wood or a mid‑rail with stainless wire infill, and asked the applicant to avoid a shiny cable finish that would read as visually prominent.
The commission voted to approve the repairs as submitted with a condition that the stair retain or include a mid‑rail and be infilled with wire in the railing bays (exhibit A), and to require the cap/finish of the rail to be subdued. The vote carried unanimously.
