Recreation commission representative and Select Board member John Morgan described the project scope: install a drain box in the low area, dig a roughly 150-foot trench from the box across the parking lot to outlet piping into the woods, and grind and regrade about 5,000 square feet of turf to create a natural swale. Contractor Hillside Landscaping prepared the plan; work also includes seeding, fertilizing and an erosion blanket to stabilize the seeded areas.
Why it matters: repeated wet conditions have made portions of the lower fields unusable for organized sports and let the town lose potential field-use revenue. The drainage work aims to restore usable playing area and is timed for summer work, with contractor completion expected in July or August.
Conservation review: town conservation commissioners reviewed the plan and told the board they had no objection after walking the site with contractor representatives; commissioners said the drainage outlets would be directed away from wetlands and buffered by existing mounding.
Vote and funding: the Select Board voted to expend $8,325 from rec impact fees, contingent on DRA (Department of Revenue Administration) guidance if required; members also noted the rec commission could use a recreation revolving fund if DRA review recommended an alternate funding source.
