Council authorizes staff to sign $118,000 Safe Streets for All grant agreement

City staff told the council that Monte Vista has been awarded a Safe Streets for All planning grant from the Federal Highway Administration and that the federal agency has reissued the grant agreement. Staff said the award is for $118,000 plus in-kind city staff time and will support design and small-scale traffic-calming work on Newcomb Avenue, where a stop sign and prior local changes prompted part of the original project scope. The grant will also produce a prioritized list of intersections and pedestrian improvements to support later implementation grants.
Council made a motion to give City Manager DJ authority to sign the grant agreement when the Federal Highway Administration completes approval; the motion passed on roll call with Councilors and the mayor voting aye. Staff said the grant-funded speed trailer and traffic counter are city assets the city will retain.
Why it matters: The award supplies dedicated federal planning funds to study and implement low-cost traffic-calming and pedestrian-safety measures, and it establishes the city’s eligibility for future implementation grants.
