Local nonprofits brief council on weekly free meal and Helping Link's Renton hub plans

Representatives of two Renton-based nonprofits spoke to the council about local services and new programs.
Kitty Becker, executive director of Sustainable Renton, described "the table," a free weekly community meal held Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m. downtown at Luther's Table. Becker said the program provides a hot breakfast, a free pantry with groceries and hygiene items, and that it has served as many as 90 guests in a morning. "There’s no sign up, no judgment, just a meal, a smile, and a space where every neighbor belongs," Becker said. She invited council members and residents to a donor dinner on May 31; a $50 ticket was described as covering food, staffing and program costs and supporting the meal's continuation.
Representatives of Helping Link, a nonprofit serving the Vietnamese refugee and immigrant community, said the organization has relocated to a community center in Renton (Triton Towers) and is developing a Renton Hub to provide social services, tutoring, language and citizenship assistance. Patrick Tuft, board president of Helping Link, said the group is conducting a community needs and strengths assessment to guide program expansion and invited council members and the mayor to visit the new hub.
Both organizations said they seek community participation and support as they expand services in Renton.
