Renton council adopts proclamations recognizing Public Works Week and Safe Boating and Paddling Week

The Renton City Council adopted two proclamations recognizing National Public Works Week and Safe Boating and Paddling Week.
Mayor Armando Pavoni read and signed a proclamation designating May 2025 as National Public Works Week in Renton. Ron Straka, utility systems division director for Public Works, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the city's 209 public works employees and thanked the council for support and funding. "These are all essential services for creating a safe, healthy, and economically viable vibrant community for the residents and businesses of Renton," Straka said.
The council also adopted a proclamation designating May 23, 2025, as Safe Boating and Paddling Week. Deborah Alderman and members of the local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary accepted the proclamation and encouraged life jacket use and boating-safety education. "We're really starting to see a lot of people, unfortunately, having very serious mishaps that really could be prevented if they had worn their life jackets," Alderman said.
Both proclamations were adopted by motion and seconder and approved by voice votes. Presenters noted the role of public-works staff in storm response and routine services, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary emphasized outreach and training opportunities for the community.
