Norwin SD highlights student, staff achievements and community partnerships at May meeting

Dr. McCracken presented the Norwin School District's final "Excellence in Norwin" report of the school year during the May 19 meeting, highlighting student projects, Career and Technical Center completions, grants and multiple arts and athletics honors.
Among the items Dr. McCracken highlighted: Sheridan Terrace students expanded an outdoor learning garden with peer-buddy support; students who completed programs at the Central Westmoreland Career and Technology Center (CTC) earned certificates in fields including automotive, construction trades and cosmetology, and some CTC graduates have enlisted in the military or become immediately employable upon graduation; the nonprofit Tom's Turkeys donated $7,000 to be distributed as Aldi gift cards to Norwin families.
The report recognized scholar-athlete honorees and educator innovation grants awarded in partnership with the Community Foundation. Community Foundation special grants this year included awards named for Del Nolfi (special education) and Robert Perkins (technology education); recipients named in the meeting included Bob Schubert and Ashley Madonna.
The district's music program was noted for being recognized again as one of the best communities for music education. Individual students from Hillcrest performed with the Westmoreland Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the high-school show choir won three awards at a Music in the Parks competition, including "best overall high school choir" and esprit de corps. One student advanced to the national level in music composition for a submission titled Imperfect Is the Brand New Perfect.
Other highlights included senior walks at the K-4 buildings, DARE graduations supported by Urban Air and local police, an Olweus bullying-prevention outreach for area preschools, a mock-accident demonstration involving police, EMS and the coroner's office, and a range of athletics achievements (tennis, lacrosse, baseball, softball, track and field) with more than 30 students advancing to state-level track competition.
