Logan rolls out protected two-way bike lanes on 500 North as trial

City staff updated the Logan City Council on the new protected bike lanes on 500 North, noting the corridor runs between 100 East and 700 East and connects the Transit Center, a neighborhood school, a park and Utah State University.
Sam Hahn (city staff, project presenter) said the corridor was chosen because it is one of the city's most heavily used bike corridors and described the lanes as a trial intended to test a protected design for the city. "Our goal was to be different. We wanted to make a statement on what we think bike lanes could be in Logan," he said. He described the lanes as two-directional and wider than a typical single-direction lane so they can be plowed with a smaller pickup-style blade in winter.
Council members and staff acknowledged the change will create temporary inconvenience for some residents and businesses, but framed the project as a step toward expanding safe alternative transportation. One council member noted it will help students get bikes off buses and ride up or down the hill near campus.
Staff said they will monitor the project, collect feedback from city operations and community users, and use the trial to inform possible future bike infrastructure.
No formal vote was required; the report was informational and council discussion closed with direction to observe how the lanes perform and gather feedback.
