District recognizes state and international science fair finalists; student cites Indian River Lagoon research

The School Board recognized students who represented Indian River County at the state science fair and heard a student reflection that linked local environmental research to broader scientific literacy.
Kristen Bruckner, curriculum specialist, introduced students who placed at the state science fair and noted Web b Webster’s second-place finish in Earth and Environmental Science at the International Science Fair. Bruckner said 20 students represented the district at state level and several were present at the meeting for recognition.
In a prepared speech Webb Webster described the Indian River Lagoon as “my classroom long before I stepped into a science lab,” and recounted conducting lagoon-centered fieldwork including seagrass and microplastic sampling and testing fish tissue. Webster said such experiences and teacher support enabled sustained scientific inquiry: “Scientific literacy is not a luxury, it's a lifeline.”
Bruckner also noted Ariana Bolton placed among the top 300 projects in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge. The board applauded the students and educators; members and the superintendent highlighted the role of hands-on learning and community support in student STEM achievement.
