DYIMS turf replacement underway; third‑party testing planned as part of remediation

Work to replace the Dennis‑Yarmouth Regional High School athletic turf has begun and will accelerate after the school year ends, the superintendent told the school committee on May 19.
Superintendent Dr. Mark Smith said crews began work the prior week, removing old turf and underpads and preparing the site. He said the project includes third‑party testing by the district’s engineer and that heavy equipment and truck traffic will increase after the last day of school to avoid disruption while classes are in session.
Dr. Smith said the project stems from a complaint about the original design and that the district has contracted Rad (the contractor) as the vendor; Rad and the owner are responsible for removal of demo materials. Dr. Smith said a small technical project committee (TPC), which includes members of the original building committee, the district’s facilities director, the OPM and the design team, meets weekly with the contractor and that the TPC approves change orders if needed.
When asked what will happen to the removed turf, Dr. Smith said the district does not own the material; any inquiries about reclaiming pieces should be pursued with the contractor, Rad.
No formal action was taken at the meeting. Dr. Smith said the district expects continued weekly progress updates and that intense construction will occur after school is out.
