School committee gives superintendent a ‘proficient’ summative rating

The Dennis‑Yarmouth Regional School Committee approved the superintendent’s summative evaluation at its May 19 meeting, awarding Superintendent Dr. Mark Smith an overall rating of “proficient.”
The evaluation packet presented numerical ratings across three steps: progress toward goals (all “met”), performance on standards (mix of proficient and one exemplary), and the final summative rating. The committee rated the superintendent exemplary for family and community engagement and proficient in instructional leadership, management and operations, and professional culture. The overall summative performance rating was recorded as proficient.
Committee materials say members provided individual numerical scores and written comments that were aggregated into the summative report. The report commended Dr. Smith’s use of data, learning walks, surveys and professional learning communities, and cited improvements in district communication following the creation of a communications and community resource coordinator role.
A motion to approve the summative evaluation passed by voice vote with no recorded opposition. The superintendent thanked committee members for feedback and said he would use the evaluation to shape goals for the coming year.
