Summary
Solon Recreation Director provided a safety update: the indoor pool deck will be resurfaced beginning in June to improve slip resistance and reduce fall risk; the outdoor pool opens Memorial Day weekend and will operate from May 30; a new playground was temporarily closed May 10 for maintenance and has since reopened after adjustments.
Solon Recreation Director (Parker) told the City Council May 20 that the city will resurface the indoor pool deck to improve traction and reduce slip-and-fall risks, and that the indoor pool will be closed beginning in June while work is completed.
Why it matters: The resurfacing is a safety project intended to lower injury risk and bring the facility into compliance with the department’s chosen standards; temporary closures affect users and scheduled programs.
Parker said a cross‑departmental team evaluated six resurfacing options and recommended the chosen material to improve slip resistance. He said the work aims to improve traction and reduce risk of falls; the indoor pool will close for the resurfacing starting in June. The outdoor pool opens for Memorial Day weekend and will reopen on an ongoing basis beginning May 30.
Parker also updated council on a maintenance issue at a new playground. The department initially attempted to secure a single affected piece with caution tape, but public access led staff to close the playground on May 10 out of an abundance of caution. Adjustments were made promptly and the playground has since been returned to service, Parker said.
Council members thanked staff for prioritizing safety and asked staff to continue communicating closure dates and program changes to residents. The recreation department asked residents for patience while work is completed and said it will post detailed schedules and closures on city channels.
