Medford panel approves short-term moves, staffing request as district studies elementary overcrowding

Members of a Medford School Committee subcommittee on Thursday recommended short-term classroom moves and staffing additions to relieve overcrowding at the city’s elementary schools and approved formation of a task force while the district conducts a space-utilization study.

The subcommittee voted 3-0 to recommend relocating two MEEP (preschool) classrooms from Roberts School to Missatuck School beginning in August 2025; to request two additional full‑time equivalent teaching positions in the Roberts School budget for August 2025; and to create a strategic space-planning task force of staff and caregivers to prepare community engagement after the study is complete.

The recommendations come after a district presentation to the subcommittee that reviewed October 1 SIMS enrollment reporting and other enrollment, program and facility data. The presenter, listed in the meeting record as a district administrator, told members that Roberts had the highest elementary enrollment on Oct. 1 (586 students) and that the district’s current count for Roberts is roughly 610. The presenter said Missatuck’s Oct. 1 enrollment was 418.
