Public Works Director Renee Cooper said the sweeper was a dealer demo offered at a discount with a five-year warranty and low hours. The city planned the purchase in its five-year capital improvement program to bring sweeping back in-house, eliminate an external contract and deliver more responsive service in neighborhoods. Cooper said the buy will allow the city to cancel the existing street-sweeping contract when it expires in August, producing roughly $40,000 in annual savings when labor and operations are considered.
Commissioners asked whether staffing levels could support the in-house operation; Cooper said the city would use existing staff and expected no adverse impact on other services. The commission approved the purchase by unanimous vote 5-0.
What happens next: Public Works expects to take possession within about a month; the city will plan routes and cancel the external contract when the warranty and delivery timeline are confirmed.
