Duke Energy to close Smith Valley Road for up to 8 hours to pull new wire; work coordinated with bridge rebuild

The Public Works and Safety Board approved a request from Duke Energy on May 19 for a one-day road closure of Smith Valley Road — up to eight hours — to allow contractor crews to pull new wire and remove old lines.
Project manager Steven Franklin told the board the closure window being considered is during the week of July 7–11 and that crews would begin work after 9 a.m. to avoid morning rush hour. “We can give a better date, with rain and stuff like that about mid June on an exact date of when we'd be looking to to take this closure,” he said.
Staff and board members asked the utility to coordinate the detour route with engineering and to ensure the closure route accommodates heavy trucks. Staff further said the line relocation is part of a broader effort tied to the Smith Valley bridge rebuild; moving poles will provide space needed for the bridge project.
The board voted to approve the request and directed Duke Energy and staff to coordinate timing and detour routing before the closure occurs.
