Springfield High coach contests termination; parent and community voices offer mixed comments

A Springfield High School coach used public comment time Monday to contest his recent termination and to press the Board of Education for more transparent administration and better guidance on Illinois High School Association rules.
The coach, who spoke without naming himself in the minutes, said he had devoted two years to building a program centered on character and achievement and said the work had been undermined by a lack of transparency and support from school administrators. He said the program faces IHSA probation and blamed incomplete information and unclear enrollment processes for one of the violations.
“Additionally, I must address a significant concern regarding the lack of guidance provided by the school administration upon my hiring, specifically concerning IHSA bylaw 3.107,” the coach said, referencing the IHSA restriction on coaches’ involvement with non‑school teams during the school year. He said he was not informed about that rule when hired and said the probation resulted from what he described as “incomplete and misrepresented facts.”
Separately during public comment, parent Natalia Edwards praised the Springfield High boys basketball coaching staff, saying the coaches require higher GPAs than IHSA minimums and that they provide consistent encouragement and academic monitoring. “The Springfield Coaching Staff is not only concerned about the games, but they're also concerned about the players,” Edwards said.
Board members did not take immediate action during public comment. Superintendent and board discussion of athletics policy and compliance were not part of the public comments portion; administrators later acknowledged the coach’s concerns and noted IHSA rules and probationary processes are formal steps managed through athletic administration.
