The Public Works and Safety Board unanimously approved Resolution 25-04 on May 19 to repeal the city’s previous light-duty policy and replace it with a temporary modified-duty policy that clarifies department-head responsibilities and establishes a 90-day maximum for modified-duty assignments.
Staff described the change as removing provisions that no longer apply and clarifying how department heads should determine and assign temporary modified duties. The policy gives precedence to employees on workers’ compensation over those on short-term disability when both situations apply, staff said.
“Those would take a precedence over someone on a short term disability leave per se,” a staff member said, describing the order of precedence. The staff member also said the 90-day maximum had been the practice previously and that the new policy formalizes that limit.
Staff indicated the policy will apply across departments and that associated governing boards (storm board, airport board and park board) will also need to enact the change for their employees. The board voted to approve the resolution with no additional conditions recorded in the meeting.
