The Illinois Department of Transportation has completed a structural evaluation of Princeton’s red covered bridge and has directed a consultant to begin phase-one engineering, city staff said at the council meeting.
City staff reported that IDOT has prepared and approved a report documenting the bridge’s structural findings and has instructed the consultant to start the engineering phase. That first phase will include coordination with appropriate preservation and regulatory agencies to ensure repair plans do not adversely affect the bridge’s historic character; city staff said that coordination is already under way.
Staff also told the council that funding for the repairs has been identified. City officials said the repair work is moving forward, though at a measured pace, and that IDOT’s approach is to restore the bridge to its historic condition.
Council members welcomed the progress and asked staff about signage and driver warnings for the structure; staff said coordination with IDOT and other agencies will include necessary traffic-safety measures during and after repair planning.
No construction timetable beyond phase-one engineering was provided at the meeting.
