Tracy Ponick, representing the RSVP free tax-preparation program, reported the program's results for the season and thanked city staff for venue support.
Ponick said RSVP prepared 2,435 federal returns covering 3,313 people; those filers received $2,442,910 in refunds. The presenter also reported nearly $535,700 saved by filers who did not have to pay commercial tax-preparation fees; she cited an average tax-prep fee in Alabama of $220 to calculate the savings. "That's how many tax returns we did for the city of Gadsden for your taxpayers," Ponick said, noting 903 returns carried a Gadsden ZIP code.
Council members thanked the volunteers and noted the economic impact of refunds and the earned-income tax credit on local spending and revenue. The council did not take action on the report; it was delivered as a public-information item and a thank-you to volunteers.
