The 252nd District Court found two defendants not competent to stand trial and ordered inpatient competency-restoration treatment after receiving forensic psychiatric reports.
In cause number 18-29467, the court took judicial notice of a report from Dr. Cameron dated April 10, 2025, concluding that the defendant — Mr. Fields — remained not competent to stand trial and that inpatient restoration was supported. Judge West ordered that Fields remain at the present facility or a suitable facility for competency restoration "for a period of not to exceed 1 year," and noted that, should the criminal case be dismissed, civil-commitment options might be explored.
Separately, in cause number 25DCCR0226, the court received a report from Dr. Hamza dated April 14, 2025, finding that Raul Gonzales was not competent to stand trial and that inpatient restoration would be supported. The court ordered Gonzales to the appropriate facility for competency restoration for a period not to exceed 120 days from arrival at the facility.
Prosecutors confirmed they had no additional evidence on competency at the hearings. Defense counsel was present in both matters. The orders require treatment in a hospital setting and pause criminal proceedings while restoration is attempted; the judge instructed counsel to review reports and prepare for follow-up hearings after restoration efforts.
