A speaker raised safety concerns about placing rental canoe/kayak operations at Gilchrist Park, saying there are alligators in the area and that liability should be considered. The speaker said they would raise the issue again at the regular council meeting.
Vice Mayor and staff also reviewed fees for the Rolling Thunder event. Rachel Berry, the city's zoning official, clarified that the permit-calculation confusion stemmed from multiple dates on the application and that, under current rules, fees do not differ for nonprofit versus for-profit organizers. She said the largest part of the fee is a $500 refundable damage deposit.
“...with the clarification the fees don't differ whether it's for profit or nonprofit,” Rachel Berry said, adding that the $500 refundable deposit is the largest component of the fee and is returned if there is no damage.
Police Chief Anne Smith was identified as the official who will accept the Family Abduction Awareness Day proclamation; other proclamations for National Public Works Week and Memorial Day were also scheduled for presentation but did not include substantive policy debate.
No council decisions on park permits, rentals or fees were taken at the pre-agenda session; staff indicated items would be addressed at the regular meeting.
