The City of La Porte Historic Preservation Commission and Indiana Landmarks announced a continuing-education event on Thursday, May 29, at the Old Republic (Prancer House) in New Carlisle. The event will include tours of the property and a presentation by Kurt Garner on compatible new construction and appropriate additions within historic districts.
"So just so everybody knows that this is the Prancer House. The Old Republic House is the Prancer House," said the meeting presenter when describing the venue. The owners, Carol and Carl, will open the property for tours and have added a recently built carriage-house garage that the session will use to illustrate compatibility guidelines.
The program will emphasize the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation guidance on compatibility without exact replication, according to the commission. Kurt Garner will discuss practical examples of compatible infill and additions. The commission said the session is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Eastern time to accommodate attendees traveling from different directions; members noted the event counts for continuing education credits.
Commission members said they expect attendance from several commissions and that organizers will track RSVPs. This item was announced as new business; no formal vote or policy decision was taken at the May 20 meeting.
