The City of La Porte Historic Preservation Commission announced a community workshop next week to explain the timeline and likely impacts of the Indiana Avenue segment of the “35 project.” Sally Larocco, chair of the commission, said the workshop is intended to give neighbors direct access to project representatives and reduce circulating misinformation.
"If they are a resident of Indiana Avenue or an affected property, along the 35 project, they're invited for free," said Sally Larocco, chair of the City of La Porte Historic Preservation Commission. She said members of the engineering firm managing the project — referenced in the meeting as Lawson and Fisher — are expected to present and answer questions.
The commission said the session will include a presentation on the project timeline, illustrative images of proposed streetscape changes, and practical tips for homeowners preparing for infrastructure work such as water-line replacement. Larocco said the commission aims to create a local resource so neighbors know who to contact with questions or concerns.
Larocco said PHLP is cosponsoring the workshop; PHLP members and Indiana Avenue or otherwise affected property owners may attend free of charge. "Non Indiana Avenue residents, I think it's $10," Larocco said during the meeting. The commission reported about 60 registrations at the time of the meeting and encouraged further outreach to affected households on the avenue.
Commission members discussed logistics: organizers plan a 6 p.m. start and asked volunteers to arrive by 5 p.m. for setup. Larocco said Lawson and Fisher "will probably have slides" and she will confirm presentation materials and follow up with the commission later in the week.
Discussion versus decision: the meeting record shows this was informational and planning discussion; no formal action or vote was taken on the workshop at the May 20 meeting. The minutes from March 18, 2025, were approved earlier in the meeting (see separate administrative item). The commission encouraged broad public attendance to reduce rumors and provide consistent, project-specific information to property owners.
The commission plans to use the workshop to produce a neighborhood-facing resource listing contacts and next steps for residents who need help or information about the project.
