Tom Thompson was sworn in as mayor of San Angelo on May 20, 2025, and immediately announced his formal resignation from his city council seat for single-member District 2, to remain vacant pending the June 7 runoff election.
The swearing-in ceremony also included oaths of office for Patrick Keeley as the District 4 councilmember and Mary Coffey as the District 6 councilmember. Outgoing Mayor Brenda Gunter received public recognition and a ceremonial key to the city during the ceremony.
Thompson, who addressed the audience after being sworn in, thanked supporters and family and said he looks forward to “taking the baton” and working for the city’s future. Keeley and Coffey each repeated the oath of office administered at the dais and offered brief remarks of appreciation to voters and supporters.
Gunter, who was elected mayor in 2017 and reelected in 2021, was recognized by the council for work on downtown revitalization, water projects, street and infrastructure priorities, and other initiatives. During the ceremony the council presented her with a key to the city and gave remarks thanking her for service.
The council did not vote on the resignation; Thompson read a statement resigning his council seat and the mayor’s office administered the oaths of office. The District 2 seat will remain vacant pending the outcome of the June 7, 2025 runoff, per Thompson’s announcement.
Looking ahead, city staff and council members said administrative follow-up will include updating council appointments and scheduling a reception and transitional tasks for the new mayor and council members.
