The Nordonia Hills City Schools Board of Education voted Monday to rescind a previously adopted reduction in force for non‑teaching staff and to begin recalling 10 paraprofessionals the district had laid off earlier.
District leaders said the district lost a total of 23 paraprofessionals to retirements and departures this spring, and that recalling the 10 laid‑off employees is needed to maintain services for students with disabilities. "We, of course, laid off 10 parapros. But you also notice 13 additional parapros also are retiring or leaving the district," the superintendent said during the discussion. "The district cannot function down 23 parapros. That's not a rational thing to do."
The board’s action starts the recall process for the 10 paraprofessionals and directs administrators to work with building principals and the special education office to place recalled staff where student need is greatest. The administration said it will balance cost-savings goals with the requirement to provide services, and that detailed placements and budget impacts will be developed by staff.
Board members emphasized that the recall does not replace all positions lost to retirement but is targeted to restore supports for students with special needs. The motion to rescind the reduction in force and start recalls passed in a roll-call vote.
Administrators said additional steps — including precise placement, timelines for return, and any further hiring — will be handled by principals and the central office, and reported back to the board.
