The Mount Vernon City School District Board of Education voted to appoint Dr. Demario Strickland as superintendent, effective July 1, 2025, for a term ending June 30, 2029.
The appointment was moved and seconded during a special board meeting May 14; board members voted to approve the motion and the chair announced the motion carried.
Dr. Demario Strickland, speaking after the vote, thanked the board and the community and said he would prioritize students, staff and safety. "I promise that I will not let you down," he said. He outlined an entry plan focused on "relationships, trust, alignment and results" and said, "Over the next 90 days, we'll engage in real dialogue about what matters to this incredible community."
Interim Superintendent Dr. K. Smith addressed the meeting and expressed support for Strickland, saying she has known him and welcomed the transition. Board members and community attendees greeted the superintendent‑designate after the vote; the board provided a brief reception that included cake.
The board did not disclose terms of the superintendent contract other than the effective and expiration dates announced at the meeting. The board later moved into a short executive session; during the motion the chair cited pending litigation and personnel matters as purposes for the closed session.
