Voyageurs National Park superintendent announces retirement; park officials report project updates

Bob DeGross, superintendent of Voyageurs National Park, told the International Falls City Council on May 19 that he will retire May 30 and introduced Brian Harmon, the park's lead for natural and cultural resources, who will serve as acting superintendent.
DeGross and Harmon provided a brief update on park matters of local interest. Park staff said that, on May 6, the park terminated the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process for its frozen‑lakes planning effort after concluding that potential vehicle impacts on frozen lake surfaces were comparable to normal summer use; the park said it will manage vehicle access on the western end of Rainy Lake and the frozen surface of Cabtoquima Lake as it had previously. Staff also noted the Kettle Falls concession contract will expire at the end of 2026 and that the park is seeking prospective operators for the 2027 contract period.
At the Rainy Lake Visitor Center, the park outlined imminent work: removal of an unused septic mound system to reconfigure upper parking and a multi‑year resurfacing and repair project anticipated in 2026–27. Park staff said they do not expect a center closure during road work but do expect traffic controls such as flagging while work is underway. The park thanked the city for recent drainage and maintenance work at the headquarters lease site and said the seasonal staffing cycle is underway.
Council reaction: Mayor and councilors thanked DeGross for his service and welcomed Harmon. No formal council action was required on the park updates.
