Board reviews plan for AHN–PennDOT intersection reconfiguration; work targeted for next summer

The Gateway School District board approved a resolution consenting to a planned reconfiguration of the Gateway Campus Boulevard–Maasai Boulevard–Haymaker Road intersection to create a new access drive to the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Forbes complex, and district staff discussed projected timelines and campus impacts.

A district representative said if AHN and PennDOT proceed according to current plans, major construction impacting the campus is expected next summer, though some preparatory work could occur earlier. Staff said that if overnight work is necessary to avoid daytime disruption, crews would schedule that work off-peak.

Board members raised questions about how the reconfiguration would affect the marquee and nearby landscaping. A district speaker said the plan could move the existing roadway about 10 feet closer to the campus and may require construction of a retaining wall and adjustments to fencing and netting near athletic fields to address concerns such as fly balls and sight lines.

The board approved the item as part of administrative resolutions (Item 8.5). Staff emphasized the schedule remains contingent on AHN and PennDOT final approvals and permits; the district said it would pass along updates to the board as additional details become available.

No construction contract for district work was authorized by the board; the action recorded at the meeting was board approval of the resolution that allows AHN and PennDOT to proceed with the design and access plan as described to the board.
