A new resident urged the Gateway School District board to form a citizen advisory commission to identify potential budget savings as the district faces a projected multimillion-dollar deficit, and board members discussed outreach methods for engaging residents in the budget process.
David Taube, who said he and his wife moved to Monroeville last July and recently had a child, told the board he hoped the district “look at things in a very long term practical way” and suggested an advisory commission composed of two teachers, two board members and two citizens to review savings opportunities and make recommendations.
Board members and staff discussed past attempts to recruit residents to committee work and noted inconsistent community participation. Doctor Rossi, a district administrator, confirmed the next budget review meeting is scheduled for April 10 and discussed posting meeting notices in local outlets.
“Let’s brainstorm ways to think how we can best outreach,” said a board member during the discussion; board members also suggested notifying the local newspaper, the Times Express, and other community channels with at least two weeks’ lead time for public meeting notices.
Board staff said financial statements and board-approved budgets are available on the district website under the business tab for residents seeking more information.
No formal board action to create an advisory commission was proposed or taken at the meeting; board members asked staff to continue public notice efforts for upcoming budget meetings.
