Gateway School District wins $450,000 PA Smart grant for K–12 STEAM initiatives

The Gateway School District board approved accepting a $450,000 PA Smart grant to fund K–12 STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) initiatives, Superintendent Dr. Rossi said during administrative reports.
The grant will fund teacher professional development, immersive STEAM classroom renovations at the middle and high schools and collaborations with local industry partners to support career-readiness programming. “We put in a grant for 500,000. We were able to get 450,000,” Dr. Rossi said, adding the district cut $50,000 from its original plan and will finalize program details at an upcoming curriculum and equity committee meeting.
The district plans to use part of the award for two renovated STEAM labs and to buy instructional resources and training. Dr. Rossi said a team will plan implementation over the summer and that the program would roll out in the fall, after teacher training and classroom preparation. Board members noted the award funds teacher training as well as materials and called the application a multi‑partner effort.
Board discussion clarified that the grant will reach K–12 students and will include targeted work at the middle and high schools. Board members asked for more detail on how the grant funds interact with existing programs and requested an itemized plan at the curriculum and equity meeting; Dr. Rossi said that meeting will go into “greater detail.”
The board approved the grant acceptance as part of consent action items. District officials said the Gateway Education Foundation will meet with teachers to develop mini‑grant rubrics and fundraising supports to leverage the PA Smart award for the fall launch.
