The Pingree Grove Village Board on May 19 approved two purchases for the police department: up to $22,000 for four Starcom‑compatible portable radios and $17,000 for a new server to store body‑worn camera footage and agency data.
Police staff said the department has used Starcom radios for about three years as part of a mandated radio migration and currently has roughly 20 radios in service; the new radios would increase the inventory to 24 so backups are available during incidents or equipment failures. The department researched two vendors and recommended the local vendor used previously even though an out‑of‑state vendor offered a slightly lower quote; staff cited local support and speed of delivery.
Separately, the board approved replacing the department’s server, which was installed in February 2012 and has reached the end of its lifecycle. The proposed server, procured through the village’s long‑term vendor MCC Technologies, provides larger storage — staff said planned capacity would be about six terabytes — to retain body‑worn camera footage and other records. Staff said they will rebuild the server from scratch, migrate necessary retained records for the statutory retention period and expect installation to take place within about a month after order; some one‑day downtime for transition is expected.
Both purchases were budgeted in the current fiscal year and staff said grant applications for radios had been denied. The motions to authorize the purchases passed on roll-call votes.
