Town and state officials warn: keep workers’ comp current, manage occupancy and remove sidewalk obstructions

Ralph and Amy Baxter warned that most businesses are not exempt from workers’ compensation and that insurance companies report lapses to the Department of Industrial Accidents; an investigator may visit and the business can be closed until coverage is reinstated, with daily fines for noncompliance.
Officials also emphasized fire‑safety and occupancy. ABCC staff said investigators check posted building occupancy during visits and that fire officials can order an immediate shut‑down where life‑safety hazards exist. Licensees were advised to manage lines and crowds proactively and to maintain a compliance binder with licenses, staff lists and training certificates.
Town staff asked licensees to remove sandwich boards, host stands and chairs from public sidewalks at night and to coordinate with the municipal permitting office if storage is a problem. The town offered to work with operators to avoid enforcement complaints.
Ending: Licensing staff said they will distribute the seminar materials and checklists, and urged licensees to confirm current insurance, post required documents and reexamine sidewalk and crowd management plans before peak season.
