Nantucket Historical Commission hears updates on resource surveys, Winter Street cobbles and memorial repairs

Holly Backus, the town’s preservation planner, said she is working through procurement steps for town‑owned resource surveys funded in part with wind‑farm monies and that she is finalizing a fiscal‑year‑2023 grant with the Massachusetts Historical Commission. "I'm in the process of getting through with our procurement for the town owned historic resources with the wind farm funding," Backus said.
Public‑works director Drew Padno reported that cobblestone restoration on Winter Street and across Main Street was recently completed by subcontractors; he inspected the work and described it as freshly installed with stone dust that will settle and blend over time. "The cobblestone work was actually done by MTK," Padno said, noting coordination with resident engineers and foremen on installation method and curb reveal.
Commissioners also learned that Colonial Stone will carry out repairs to the Veil War monument this coming Sunday. Holly Backus said the masonry crew arranged police details and understood that a few rows of cobbles and the adjoining curb will be temporarily removed for access. Staff cautioned that the repaired area will look new at first and that patina and settling will take time; they discussed posting a public notice to explain the temporary visual change.
The commission also reviewed administrative items: procurement for MHC grants, a pending CLG (Certified Local Government) meeting to be scheduled before June 30, and coordination on installing new bollards on Fair Street to protect a Meridian stone. Commissioners asked staff to post available survey PDFs on the town website while the state system (MACRIS) is updated.
Ending — Staff said they will continue procurement tasks, coordinate with DPW on sample fixtures and cobble installations, notify the public about the memorial repair, and schedule the CLG meeting before June 30.
