At its April 2025 meeting, the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee reviewed a slide deck proposing a prototype treatment for several multiuse path intersections: 18‑inch caution intersection signs on path approaches, plus pavement markings and two‑phase stop controls (stop before the path, stop after entering the roadway).
Mike presented illustrations and a proposed layout for locations identified in prior meetings. He said the slides reflected earlier committee discussions of crossings such as Poplar Road and other corridors and that he had recycled and updated material from earlier sessions. One committee member said the proposal was “a huge improvement on the stop signs” and supported moving the design forward as either an interim or final treatment.
Members discussed a handful of locations where the committee had previously hesitated about stop signs, including Nupur Farm Road, Nevers Road, Surfside, Old South Road, Cliff and others noted in the slide deck. Committee members suggested adding path‑ending signs at locations where the path merges with traffic lanes so users are warned they are about to enter a roadway.
There was consensus that, if Traffic Safety approved the prototype layout, the committee should present it to the Select Board as a proof of concept. Mike said he would share the locations with Traffic Safety and, if acceptable, take the package to the Select Board. The committee did not take a binding vote but indicated support to move the proposal to traffic safety review.
Next steps: Mike will share the proposed locations and layouts with Traffic Safety for review and then bring the concept to the Select Board if Traffic Safety endorses the approach.
