Medford school leaders create chief operations officer role, approve job posting with amendments

The Medford School Committee on May 19 approved creation of a Chief Operations Officer (COO) position to centralize oversight of facilities, instructional technology, and security, and authorized posting the job with committee amendments.
Interim Superintendent Suzanne Gallucci proposed the new role following the announced departure of Assistant Superintendent Peter Cushing. The COO would oversee buildings and grounds, the district’s IT operations that relate to devices and infrastructure, and safety and security programs. Gallucci said the district is also hiring for the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction concurrently.
Committee members asked for tighter language in the job description to reflect likely changes in IT staffing and to make supervisory responsibilities explicit. Member Graham asked that the job description refer to the district’s senior IT leader rather than the title “network administrator” so the posting remains accurate as the department matures, and requested that the COO be responsible for implementation and optimization of the district’s Operations Hero facilities platform.
Member Reinfeld asked that the posting include an explicit list of direct reports and a clearer description of supervisory responsibilities. Member Entapa requested the job posting include an enforceable salary range in order to meet Massachusetts disclosure requirements; staff said the range discussed internally is approximately $100,000–$150,000.
The committee approved the COO job description as amended and added a clause for “other duties as assigned by the superintendent” to allow flexibility for emergent tasks.
Ending: Gallucci said the district will proceed to post the position on the Medford Public Schools application portal with the requested amendments and salary range guidance and will continue recruiting for the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
