Students ask board to support funding for bathroom vaping detectors at Belvidere North

A group of Belvidere North High School students spoke during public comment May 19 to propose installing vape detectors in school bathrooms to reduce vaping and nicotine exposure.
Student Nathan Alexander (identified in the meeting as the lead speaker for the group) said they gathered peer testimony about frequent vaping in restrooms and proposed a collaborative fundraiser involving district parents and staff to pay for detectors. "We believe this goal is attainable with support of the school and local community," Alexander said. He told the board Belvidere North administration had obtained an "estimated quote for installation at approximately $20,000." The students said they planned to use a Students Square fundraiser and asked the board for support.
Board President thanked the students for their presentation; the board did not take action on the proposal during the meeting and staff did not present a formal agenda item for detector installation.
The students framed their request as a community safety and health measure and asked for the board's support in connecting to fundraising and any administrative estimates or approvals needed.
