The superintendent’s report cited the New Jersey Anti‑Bullying Bill of Rights as the statutory framework for HIB reporting and said the district’s trained anti‑bullying specialists conducted each investigation.
The district reported 10 investigations at the elementary level with three confirmed HIB incidents, 13 investigations at John H. Walker Middle School with seven confirmed HIB incidents, and six investigations at Nutley High School with two confirmed HIB incidents. The superintendent listed motivations that included gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, color, religion and national origin.
When HIB was confirmed, the district said consequences and interventions included detention, suspension or probation; social probation; counseling by school‑based staff or external referrals; reflective assignments; schedule changes; increased staff monitoring; parent‑administrator conferences; and HIB‑specific training for students and faculty. The superintendent thanked anti‑bullying coordinator Joseph Papello and building anti‑bullying specialists for their work and said prevention efforts include training for all staff and curriculum‑embedded programs such as Competent Kids Caring Communities for grades K–5 and RULER and LEAD for grades 6–12.
The district also said HIB resources and reporting tools remain available on the district website and indicated continued emphasis on prevention and monitoring. No further disciplinary totals tied to specific cases or individual names were provided in the public presentation.
