Board approves survey of 10.5 acres on Jeff State property for proposed CareerTech center

The Chilton County Board of Education voted May 19 to approve a survey of approximately 10.5 acres on property adjoining Jefferson State Community College to support a potential deed transfer for a new CareerTech center.
The superintendent said the district will pay for the survey and intends to hand completed survey documents to Jefferson State for their review as part of the college's process for deeding property. The superintendent said one firm’s estimate appeared high and staff are seeking additional quotes. “We will go with the cheapest one that he finds,” a speaker said, referring to Mr. Ellison obtaining estimates.
Board members also discussed why the cost estimate was high: Jefferson State’s property would require surveying about 63 acres to carve out the 10.5-acre parcel, which raises the price. Board members said the district may need to bring the survey cost back for another board vote if it exceeds what staff can approve. The board approved the motion to proceed with obtaining the survey estimates and to pay for the work if within authorized limits.
