Roseville — The City Council unanimously approved a proclamation declaring June 2025 as Gun Violence Awareness Month and June 6, 2025 as Gun Violence Awareness Day, highlighting local and national efforts to reduce gun violence.
The proclamation cited national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics on firearm deaths and injuries and noted that firearms are a leading cause of death for young people in the United States. It also referenced local incidents, including a 2022 shooting on West Lake Owasso Boulevard that injured a Roseville police officer. The proclamation called for evidence‑based approaches including integration of social services and mental‑health support, gun turn‑in events and free gun locks to secure firearms in homes.
Councilmembers thanked local volunteers and organizations that provide free gun locks and run safety outreach at community events. The council approved the proclamation 4‑0.
