Roseville — The City Council agreed May 19 to schedule a follow‑up discussion of the City’s streetlight policy, after Councilmember Graf requested council review of placements where residents say additional fixtures are redundant.
Graf said the policy adopted March 4, 2024, has led to new installations along corridors such as Highway 36 and Highway 35W that some residents say are unnecessary because the areas are already well lit. She asked for a mechanism that would allow residents to petition the city or for the council to consider exceptions when additional lights appear redundant. Trojgen and other councilmembers discussed points for a future discussion: how commercial zones are handled differently under the policy, what types of fixtures (down‑facing versus louvered) are used, and how neighborhoods can request installation or removal.
Councilmember Strachan asked for clarity about what happens when neighborhood preferences change over time and how lighting decisions affect pedestrian safety. Councilmembers agreed the item should return with staff input and any implementation feedback from the first year of the policy. The council set the direction unanimously to include a streetlight policy review on a future agenda and asked staff to bring any operational feedback collected since implementation.
