Everett School Committee accepts $25,000 apprenticeship grant and $39,390 teacher-diversity award

The Everett School Committee voted unanimously Monday to accept two state-funded grants intended to expand teacher training and diversify the district workforce.
The superintendent asked the committee to accept a $25,000 registered teacher apprenticeship program grant to support paraprofessionals taking coursework through Bridgewater State University as they pursue bachelor's degrees. The motion to accept the grant was made by Miss Corniglio and seconded by Miss Cristiano; the roll call vote was 7-0 in favor.
Superintendent (title used in meeting) said the apprenticeship program "helps continue to support our folks here in the district to take additional courses through a program that we have with Bridgewater State University" and described the grant as targeted at advancing paraprofessionals from associate to bachelor's degrees.
The committee also accepted a $39,390 teacher diversification grant from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to provide tuition reimbursements for BIPOC staff. The superintendent noted that the district applied for the award and was evaluated on an action plan; he added, "BIPOC, as you know, stands for black indigenous and people of color." Miss Babcock moved acceptance of the diversification grant and Miss Cristiano seconded; the vote was 7-0.
Both grants were placed on file after acceptance. The superintendent and committee did not record additional conditions or amendments to either award during the meeting.
